Bogong to Hotham: The Rooftop Run

The Bogong to Hotham Rooftop Run is an iconic mountain ultra held in Victoria’s High Country, offering a true test of endurance, spirit, and alpine beauty. Runners begin at Mountain Creek Campground, ascending to the summit of Mount Bogong, Victoria’s highest peak, before descending T‑Spur to the Big River and climbing Duane’s Spur to reach the stunning Bogong High Plains. From there, the course winds across the high plains and finishes with a challenging climb up Swindler’s Spur to the summit of Mount Hotham.
The event offers three distance options — 64 km (full ultra), 35 km, and 29 km — catering to both seasoned ultra runners and those newer to high-country trail running. The course requires navigational skills as it is mostly unmarked, adding to the adventure and sense of achievement. With strict safety requirements and mandatory gear, the Rooftop Run is regarded as one of the most challenging and rewarding trail runs in Australia.
More than just a race, the Rooftop Run is deeply rooted in community and environmental respect. Organisers provide support through aid stations and transport options for certain sections, while encouraging runners to embrace the camaraderie and alpine beauty of the High Country. It’s a celebration of endurance, nature, and connection, making it a must-experience event for trail running enthusiasts.
